When I started listening to bluegrass music I found myself attracted to the murder ballads and killing songs as much as anyone. One of the elements of the bluegrass community I most appreciated was that a performer could be on stage singing of the fate of Pretty Polly, the girl with the little glass of wine, Tom Dula, or the Knoxville Girl while the very next song could be one of sincere Praise.

This dichotomy of conflict within the human spirit was immensely appealing. As I listened more and more I better appreciated the learning I could do while listening to bluegrass gospel.

I've said elsewhere, most of my bible knowledge has been acquired through listening to bluegrass songs- through the music I've extended my knowledge of Canaan, John's revelations, the resurrection, the pharaoh's daughter, and so much more. As a result of my listening to bluegrass gospel music I am a better reader, a stronger writer, and a more rounded individual; heck, my ability to be a good listener at funerals has markedly developed.

Some days, I like to think I am even a better person as a result of the messages absorbed from the singing of Larry Sparks, the Stanleys, Paul Williams, and others. Unfortunately, all three albums I write about today seem to have been largely ignored when it comes to airplay and press. Kathy Kallick's recent release is a collection of bluegrass gospel both new and previously enjoyed.

Within this beautifully packaged set- all shades of blue, much like her music- one finds 18 bluegrass gospel performances that rank with the very best the music has to offer.

Bill & Gloria Gaither - I'll Meet You in the Morning [Live]

A Bluegrass Gospel Collection" self-released on Live Oak Records includes four recently recorded songs which find Kallick working within the range of settings for which she has become noted. The hopeful I'll Not Be A Stranger features a trio with Keith Little taking the lead vocals and the remarkable John Reischman, who makes several appearances throughout the set, on mandolin. Listening to Kallick sing with Laurie Lewis is always a treat, and their a cappella rendition of Daniel Prayed is most impressive.

These new recordings, each very enjoyable and enlightening in their message, show the breadth of sounds and approaches contained throughout the collection. Duets have their place as do intimate trios and full-band treatments. Some of the music is very much obviously within the bluegrass traditions and in other places Kallick seasons her sound with elements of near-grass, folk and country.

Highlights will be dependent upon personal preference, but I never tire of hearing The Messenger, a truly original sounding song with a terrific- if slightly fearsome- story, and the thematically linked It's Gonna Rain and God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign. Kallick's "Warmer Kind of Blue" album has long been a favourite, and that album is well-represented by two previously mentioned songs as well as Late Last Night and especially In the Middle of My Town. Further expanded with a recently discovered live track from"Count You Blessings: A Bluegrass Gospel Collection" is a well-constructed set of bluegrass gospel.

It should appeal to both Kathy Kallick's many long-time followers and those still discovering the talents of this west coast bluegrass gem.

Over the past decade few can challenge the consistency of Paul Williams when it comes to releasing superior albums within the bluegrass gospel field.

Whether recording 'solo' sets or with various partners including Cliff Waldron, J. We got up and left. When she said that only Heaven will be better than to walk the sea with Jesus, something came over me that I cannot explain.

Rose Maddox:I'll Meet You In Church Sunday Morning Lyrics

Not only was our daughter in the presence of the Lord, playing, laughing and loving, but I too, needed to step out of the boat to experience real happiness again. Walk The Sea With Me has been playing non-stop in our home since we returned and I certainly feel, like your daughter, that God is singing over me.

Thank you so much for your gift of music, song and words. You will be our favorite group forever. Thank you again, T. We've not heard the Downings until this weekend and think they are an upcoming group. I've asked for you to email your E-Newsletter, because I want to keep track of the Downings, as we'd love to have them come to Mississippi to play for our multi-church music festival held every year.

Thank you again, John Bromen We love SDC. Thankyou so much for the hard work in putting on these events. We have only one suggestion. While at the park this weekend, we could not get in to see the Downings. Boatworks was full with people standing in the sidewalks for every show.

We've followed them ever since we saw them at SDC, so thank you for having them at the park, but can you try and put them in a place where at least all of the people can set down. It's a good kind of problem to have, it's just we saw people wanting to hear them and walk off because they couldn't sit down.

Sincerely, Jack and Joann Reading Dear Silver Dollar City: We are coming back this weekend to listen to more good music and was wanting to pick up the Downings three CD's. We couldn't get to them to buy them last weekend. I talked to many folks that was thinking that the Downings would be playing in the park on Sunday afternoon and they were gone, so they were wanting their music as well.

If you don't have their CD's do know how to get them? My husband and I can't tell you how much we enjoyed listening to you at Silver Dollar City.

Your music was beautiful and the smiles on your faces truly showed the love of the Lord. In addition to the songs your words of encouragement were wonderful. We really enjoyed hearing Jennifer talking about her songs, telling the story of how the Lord inspired her and yes boldly talking about knowing the Lord Jesus.

Very few groups tell of the importance of knowing Him and we're glad that you did. The little girls are so precious. Their expressions were priceless and our little girls wanted to know what song they were singing because they want to sing it at our church.

Our pastor and his wife sat with us and both of us talked about how worshipful the experience was. My husband serves on the board of the Southern Baptist Convention and was wanting to know how far in advance that you are scheduled.

The convention next year really needs your music, because as an organization we feel like that we've really "left our first love", the Lord Jesus. Your songs, words and testimonies coming from a family is what we need. The church today has lost the focus on, next to the Lord, our family! What an example, the family, that needs to be seen, singing in harmony and covered with the love of Christ.

The SBC board meeting will be later this year to discuss the convention activities, so we'll be getting in touch. Thank you so much for your hard work, sacrifice, and love for the Lord that we hear in your songs. Hi, I have so enjoyed your sweet harmonies so so much. I bought 3 CD's on iTunes. Best Regards - J. I bought one of your new CD's and my granddaughter wanted it so bad, that I gave it to her and ordered another one.

We've all enjoyed every minute we spent listening to your family. God is a Great God! We so enjoyed your portion of the Owasso Gospel Opry. Looking forward to upcoming concerts. We were planning on attending your concerts at SDC in August We were blessed to have seats directly behind Luke's grandparents and we were privileged to see the new baby. She slept so soundly. Oh, did we say how cute she was? The Owasso school's PAC is such a good place for your music.

Everybody that reads this should support this venture percent. We just been blessed by your music at the Owasso Gospel Opry!. We received your invitation email and couldn't hardly wait to see what the Owasso Gospel Opry was all about.

We loved the Nelons and the Greenes, but we have to say, to our ears, that your music is from heaven! We are southern gospel music fans, but the bluegrass sound is really clean, clear and goes straight to the heart! We'll be seeing you at Silver Dollar City this next week, so look for us.
