Tablet PCs came out of the closet in record numbers at the recently concluded CESbut Asus has had one out for a while. We loved how small and light the machine was, but we lamented the fact that it really wasn’t equipped to handle any task more demanding than typing a Word document, sending an email or engaging in the occasional Skype call.
You launch the Touch Gate interface by either tapping a physical button on the screen bezel you hold the same button down to rotate through screen orientationslaunching from a desktop shortcut, or by tapping a launch button on the Mac-like Eee dock bar that sits at the top of the Windows XP desktop.
Horizontal viewing angles are less than impressive with colors starting to shift at wide viewing angles possibly a result of the touchscreen layer. The T91 also includes the standard headphone and microphone jacks, Ethernet port, and a standard VGA out port.
The bottom of the netbook chassis shows a simple RAM access cover. T991 interesting was FotoFun, which lets you flip through photo galleries, moving and rotating photos with your finger similar to what we’ve seen in HP’s TouchSmart systems.

The speakers produce good volume enough to fill a small room and there is minimal distortion until you get to higher volume levels. So, details like letters are bigger. The speakers lack any real bass, but the range of highs and midtones are fine.
I spent a week putting the T91 through its paces and what I discovered was a convenient eeee companion PC that might actually be more impressive than the specs suggest. While it’s not perfect a perfect product, the touch-screen interface gives you another way to launch applications and even to write notes. Asus includes several useful widgets to start with, and more are available from Yahoo. It’s a much more flexible way to interact with a Netbook–especially if you’re tripped up by the tiny touch pads and keyboards found on most minilaptops.
